Open Enrollment Periods for Children

Important Information for Washington State Applicants Under 19

Special rules apply for applicants under the age of 19 when applying for health care coverage in Washington State. Please contact us at 1 (877) 466-1999 9am to 5pm PT for a paper application or assistance.

Applicants and family members who are under age 19 may enroll during the open enrollment period defined by state or federal law. The open enrollment periods for Washington State are March 15 through April 30 and September 15 through October 31. 

A special enrollment period of 31 days is available to any person under age nineteen if they experience one of the following qualifying events:

1.  Loss of employer sponsored coverage that covered him or her
2.  Loss of his or her eligibility under Medicaid or other public program
3.  Loss of his or her coverage due to the dissolution of a marriage
4.  Loss of his or her coverage due to a change of residency that leads to service area restrictions

Also, a special enrollment period of 60 days is available to any person under age nineteen following his or her birth, adoption, or placement for adoption. Coverage of a newborn or child adopted or placed for adoption will be effective as of his or her date of birth if he or she is enrolled within 60 days of birth.
